The Sword Mountains
The Sword Mountains are a formidable, arc-shaped range of steep, craggy peaks and snow-capped summits that dominate the western skyline of the North. Located northwest of Waterdeep and east of the Mere of Dead Men, these mountains form a natural barrier between the civilized Sword Coast and the wild interior. For travelers and settlers, their dark slopes are a constant reminder of the untamed dangers that lie just beyond the edge of settlement.
To the people of the coast, the Sword Mountains are a place of legend, hardship, and buried treasure. They are the source of the gold and platinum that lures prospectors, the home of orc hordes that descend to raid, and the graveyard of lost dwarven kingdoms.
Geography & Climate
The mountains rise sharply from the coastal plains, their western slopes descending in rolling foothills towards the Trackless Sea. The lower elevations are covered in hardy pine forests and alpine grasses, giving way to bare stone, treacherous cliffs, and permanent snow at the highest altitudes. The climate is harsh, with dangerous storms known to brew around the highest peaks like Icespire Peak.
The range is dotted with deep valleys, hidden passes, and a labyrinth of natural caves and forgotten tunnels—some dug by dwarves, others by monsters or the elements themselves.
History: A Land of War and Lost Kingdoms
The history of the Sword Mountains is a long saga of conflict between the civilizations that sought to claim its riches and the monstrous humanoids that infest its depths.
- Ancient Battles: In ancient times, the fall of a great dragon created one of the mountain’s vast valleys. For centuries, the mountains served as a battleground where dwarven citadels carved into the stone clashed with orc hordes descending from the heights.
- The Rise of Ukrypt: This cycle of violence crystallized in the 10th century DR when the orc warlord Uruth Ukrypt united the tribes under the Brotherhood of the Scarlet Scourge. His horde conquered dwarven holds, drove out the trolls (contributing to the coastal Trollwars), and launched repeated, failed invasions of Waterdeep itself.
- Phandelver’s Pact & Its End: Around this same time (circa 950 DR), the legendary Phandelver’s Pact was forged between dwarves, gnomes, and human spellcasters within Wave Echo Cave. They bound the cave’s magical energies into the Forge of Spells, a workshop capable of creating powerful magic items. In 951 DR, Uruth Ukrypt’s forces destroyed the nearby town of Phandalin and sacked Wave Echo Cave, scattering its defenders and leaving the location of the Forge lost to history.
- Dragon Wars: The orc dominance was later challenged by ancient dragons. The gold dragon Palarandusk and others attacked orc supplies and claimed their strongholds, with the red dragon Shammagar taking up residence in the conquered dwarven citadel of Melairren.
Notable Locations
The mountains are littered with points of interest, from active settlements to haunted ruins.
| Location | Description & Significance |
|---|---|
| Wave Echo Cave | The fabled, labyrinthine cavern complex that was the site of Phandelver’s Pact and its legendary Forge of Spells. Its location was lost after its sacking in 951 DR. |
| Icespire Peak | The tallest and most notorious peak in the range, known for its dangerous storms. The fortress of Icespire Hold sits atop it, recently laired in by the young white dragon Cryovain. |
| Axeholm | An abandoned dwarven stronghold, now said to be haunted by a banshee and other dangers. |
| Gnomengarde | A minor kingdom of inventive rock gnomes living in caves at the mountain’s base. |
| Mountain’s Toe Mine | A successful gold mine owned by a Neverwintan business consortium, representing the ongoing economic draw of the mountains. |
| Kheldell | A small, hardy human village sustained by logging in the foothills. |
| Temple of Abbathor | A site dedicated to the dwarven god of greed, abandoned by dwarves and later uncovered by miners. |
Inhabitants & Dangers
The wilds of the Sword Mountains are perpetually dangerous. The most common threats include:
- Orc & Goblinoid Tribes: Various tribes, some possibly remnants of the old Brotherhood of the Scarlet Scourge, constantly raid the lowlands from their mountain dens.
- Trolls, Ogres, and Giants: These monstrous humanoids lurk in caves and passes, with trolls being a particular menace for their regenerative abilities.
- Dragons: Ancient dragons have long been drawn to the range, and younger ones like Cryovain continue the tradition.
- Wolves & Worgs: Packs of these predators roam the slopes and passes.
- Subterranean Horrors: From the deep caves and forgotten dwarven tunnels emerge strange aberrations, undead, and the echoes of ancient magic.
For Adventurers
For your party, the Sword Mountains represent the ultimate challenge of the frontier.
- The Promise of Wealth: Rumors of lost mines, dragon hoards, and the legendary Forge of Spells itself have drawn adventurers for generations. Any expedition into the mountains, however, is a deadly gamble.
- A Source of Conflict: The monsters that call these peaks home are the same ones that threaten settlements like Phandalin. Clearing a goblin den or tracking an ogre to its lair often means venturing into the mountains’ shadow.
- A Landscape of History: Every ruined fortress, overgrown mine shaft, and carved stone tells a piece of the North’s brutal history—a history of dwarven pride, orcish fury, and the constant struggle to carve out a place in a hostile world.
Venturing into the Sword Mountains is not a simple journey. It is an expedition into a land that has swallowed kingdoms. Preparation, courage, and a sharp blade are not just advisable; they are the price of survival.
