Gauntlgrym

Gauntlgrym is the most legendary of all lost dwarven kingdoms in the North. For centuries, its name was a whispered myth—a symbol of lost glory and peerless craftsmanship. Its rediscovery and reclamation in the late 15th century DR is a saga of heroism and tragedy, for Gauntlgrym’s secret history holds the direct cause of Neverwinter’s greatest catastrophe: the Ruining of 1451 DR.

This ancient city is not merely a ruin but a reclaimed bastion of dwarven power, ruled by King Bruenor Battlehammer. Its restoration represents the rebirth of one of Neverwinter’s most vital Ancient Alliances, a bond of stone and steel that is fundamental to the North’s stability.

Overview: The Crown of Delzoun

Gauntlgrym was the magnificent capital of the ancient Delzoun dwarf empire. It was famed not just for its scale—with halls and doors large enough for dragons to pass through—but for the miraculous quality of the metalwork forged within its depths. The city’s greatest secret and the source of its power was the fire primordial Maegera, imprisoned beneath its foundations.

This slumbering entity of pure elemental fire was harnessed by dwarf and human wizards to heat the Great Forge, creating artifacts of unsurpassed quality. The alliance that built Gauntlgrym was a joint effort between the dwarves of Delzoun and the human arcanists of ancient Illusk (on whose ruins Luskan was later built).

History: A Cycle of Glory, Loss, and Return

Gauntlgrym’s history is a long cycle of prosperity, invasion, and abandonment, culminating in a modern rebirth.

The Ancient Foundation (c. -335 DR to 153 DR)

  • c. -335 DR: Construction of the city begins as a joint project between Delzoun dwarves and the wizards of Illusk.
  • -321 DR: The city is completed, becoming a thriving home to dwarves, humans, and Netherese refugees.
  • -111 DR: The city falls during the early Orc Marches but is resettled decades later.
  • 153 DR: A devastating invasion by lycanthropes and illithids (mind flayers) forces the final abandonment of the city to the monsters of the Underdark. For over a millennium, Gauntlgrym is lost, known only through the Canticle of Gauntlgrym, a dirge and rallying cry remembered by all descendants of Delzoun.

The Catastrophic Rediscovery (1451 DR)

  • Agents of the Red Wizards of Thay, including a vampire and a dominated Delzoun dwarf, discover the city. They trick their way to the Great Forge and awaken the slumbering primordial, Maegera.
  • The released primordial’s rage channels directly through Mount Hotenow, triggering the catastrophic volcanic eruption that destroyed Neverwinter in the Year of Knowledge Unearthed, 1451 DR. This event forever links the fates of the two cities.

Reclamation and Rule (1463 DR - Present)

  • 1463 DR: Following a spiritual “Summons” from Gauntlgrym’s dwarven ghosts, the heroic dwarf Bruenor Battlehammer leads an expedition to reclaim the city. He finds it partially occupied by a drow house from Menzoberranzan, who had seized the forges.
  • Late 15th Century DR: After ousting the drow, Bruenor Battlehammer successfully reclaims Gauntlgrym and is crowned its king. He now rules from the Great Throne of Moradin, leading the difficult work of restoring the legendary city.

Geography & Key Locations

Gauntlgrym is located in the Crags, southwest of Neverwinter. It is a vast, multi-level underground metropolis.

  • The Vault of Kings: The immense throne room and central chamber, large enough to hold a surface town. It houses the Great Throne of Moradin, a magically protected seat that only the rightful king can occupy.
  • The Iron Tabernacle: The spiritual and geographical heart of the city. This vast complex of temples, shrines, and crypts is dedicated to the dwarven pantheon and serves as the central hub for the city’s magical mine-cart transit system.
  • The Great Forge: The legendary workshop that gave Gauntlgrym its fame. Its furnaces were heated by tapping into the power of the imprisoned primordial, Maegera, allowing for the creation of miraculous arms, armor, and artifacts.
  • The Fiery Pit: The deep chasm where the fire primordial Maegera is once again imprisoned, its power carefully controlled by the restored dwarven stewards.

The Stance with Neverwinter: A Reforged Alliance

Gauntlgrym’s relationship with Neverwinter is one of profound historical connection and renewed mutual dependence.

  • The Unbreakable Link: The two cities are forever tied by the event of 1451 DR. Neverwinter’s destruction was a direct result of meddling with Gauntlgrym’s forge, a fact known to scholars and leaders in both cities.
  • King Bruenor’s Rule: The reclamation by Bruenor Battlehammer is a pivotal event for Neverwinter. Bruenor is a legendary, honorable, and steadfast ally. His presence transforms Gauntlgrym from a lost legend or a drow-held threat into a resurgent, friendly power.
  • A Pillar of the North: A restored Gauntlgrym under stable dwarven rule acts as a powerful southern buffer for Neverwinter, securing the frontier against monsters from the Underdark and the Crags. The ancient pact of mutual aid and trade between dwarf and human is actively being revived, offering Neverwinter access to the finest smithcraft in Faerûn.
