Neverwinter Timeline

This timeline traces the rulers and defining events of Neverwinter, from its founding to the present day. It is a story of kings, craftsmen, catastrophe, and courage.

Ancient Foundations (c. 87–900 DR)

87 DR – Founding

The settlement of Eigersstor is founded around Castle Never by the sun elf hero Halueth Never, built upon the ruins of the older elven nation of Iliyanbruen. It serves as a refuge against orc invasions.

187 DR – The Name “Neverwinter”

The settlement is renamed Neverwinter, a direct translation of its Illuskan name to the common Chondathan tongue.

c. 650–750 DR – The First Lord Protectors

Early rulers are military leaders titled Lord Protector, chosen to defend the growing town from pirates, raiders, and monsters. Records from this era are sparse.

The Alagondar Golden Age (c. 1329–1451 DR)

c. 1329 DR – Rule of Nasher Alagondar

The famed adventurer Nasher Alagondar becomes ruler. His just and stable rule brings prosperity and craftsmen’s fame to the city. He later accepts the title of King by popular acclaim.

1325 DR – Founding of the Lords’ Alliance

Neverwinter becomes a founding member of the Lords’ Alliance, a coalition of northern cities formed to ensure mutual defense and trade security against common threats.

1372 DR – The Wailing Death & Luskan’s Betrayal

A magical plague known as the Wailing Death ravages Neverwinter. Seizing the advantage, its ancient rival Luskan declares war and invades. The city is saved, but the betrayal cements eternal hatred between the two city-states.

1374 DR – The Shadow War

Neverwinter weathers a covert war against the extradimensional King of Shadows, emerging victorious but with its trade and treasury drained.

1385 DR – The Spellplague

The Spellplague strikes Faerûn. Neverwinter is damaged but not destroyed, and the Alagondar line continues to rule effectively through the difficult century that follows.

1409 DR – The Fall of Many-Arrows

The allied forces of the North, including Neverwinter, finally break the besieging orc kingdom of Many-Arrows, ending the constant warfare.

1451 DR – The Ruining

Mount Hotenow erupts catastrophically. Neverwinter is destroyed. The ruling Alagondar family is killed, and most survivors flee. The city is left a haunted ruin.

The Age of Ash (1451–1467 DR)

1451–1467 DR – The Ghost Years

Neverwinter is a dead city. Monsters and plaguechanged horrors haunt the ruins. Refugees scatter across the Sword Coast. The Jewel of the North becomes a cautionary tale.

The Rebirth (1467 DR–Present)

1467 DR – Neverember’s Gambit

Lord Dagult Neverember, the Open Lord of Waterdeep, declares himself Protector of Neverwinter and launches the Neverwinter Resettlement Charter. He invests his personal fortune to clear rubble, hire the Mintarn mercenaries for protection, and attract new settlers.

1470–1480 DR – The Mintarn Garrison

Neverember’s hired mercenaries secure the ruins, creating tension between soldiers and the stubborn survivors who never left. The first new districts rise from the rubble.

1485 DR – The New Neverwinter Council

A governing council is established, split between Neverember’s appointments and representatives of the original Neverwintan families. The political rift between Old and New Neverwinter formalizes.

c. 1487 DR – The Return of the Son

Rumors spread that a true heir of the Alagondar line has been found—a figure known only as the Lost Heir. The claim, though unproven, fuels unrest and hope in equal measure, challenging Neverember’s claim to the throne.

1489 DR – Neverember’s Exile from Waterdeep

Lord Neverember is ousted as Open Lord of Waterdeep and replaced by Laeral Silverhand. Bitter from this exile, he turns his full attention to Neverwinter, where his efforts eventually lead the citizens to accept him as their rightful Lord Protector.

1491 DR – Now

Neverwinter is functional but unfinished. Lord Neverember rules as Protector, but his legitimacy is still questioned by some. The city is a magnet for adventurers, traders, and those seeking to carve a new life from the ashes of the old. This is the year your adventure begins.

The Legacy of Rule

Neverwinter has been shaped by:

  • Kings who built beauty (The Alagondars)
  • A catastrophe that destroyed it (The Ruining)
  • An outsider who dared rebuild it (Lord Neverember)

Who will write the next chapter is unknown. The throne—real or symbolic—remains contested. In Neverwinter, history is not over. It is being unearthed with every stone turned, and rewritten with every sword drawn.
