Lord Dagult Neverember

Lord Dagult Neverember is the Lord Protector of Neverwinter and the former Open Lord of Waterdeep. A charismatic, cunning, and ambitious statesman, he is one of the most powerful figures on the Sword Coast. He is the architect of Neverwinter’s rebirth from the ashes of the Ruining, yet his rule is built on a fabricated bloodline, ruthless pragmatism, and a deep-seated need to prove his legitimacy. To the citizens of Neverwinter, he is both savior and “Pretender”—a complex figure who has saved their city while binding it to his own will.

Overview: The Lion of Two Cities

Dagult Neverember is a study in contradictions: a commanding leader with a common touch, a shrewd politician who prefers “straight dealing,” and a visionary rebuilder who never fails to profit from his people’s fortune. His life’s work has been the resurrection of Neverwinter, a project born of genuine ambition to restore the “Jewel of the North” and a calculated plan to build a personal mercantile empire with himself at its head.

His journey from the nobility of Waterdeep to the throne of a ruined city, and his subsequent fall from grace in his homeland, is the political epic that defines the modern North. In the year 1491 DR, he rules Neverwinter with a firm hand, his authority secured by rebuilt streets and a network of spies, yet constantly challenged by those who remember the old Alagondar kings.

History & Rise to Power

Early Life & Ambition (Pre-1467 DR)

Dagult Neverember was born into wealth and opportunity. He married a noblewoman of Waterdeep’s Brandarth family, gaining her property and fortune, though she later left her wealth to their son, Renaer, straining their relationship. He was a respected figure in Waterdeep, known for his political acumen and force of personality.

The Dual Lordship (1467–1489 DR): Waterdeep and Neverwinter

Following the Ruining of Neverwinter in 1451 DR, Neverember saw a pivotal opportunity.

  • Seizing Neverwinter (c. 1467 DR): He arrived in the destroyed city and declared himself its Lord Protector, claiming to be a distant descendant of the lost Alagondar royal line—a claim supported by paid scribes and fabricated genealogies. He invested a massive portion of his personal fortune to clear rubble, hire the Mintarn mercenaries for security, and attract new settlers, launching the “New Neverwinter movement.
  • Open Lord of Waterdeep: During this same period, he ascended to the position of Open Lord of Waterdeep. For nearly two decades, he ruled both cities simultaneously, an unprecedented concentration of power. His focus, however, increasingly shifted northward.

The Fall and Consolidation (1489 DR–Present)

  • Ouster from Waterdeep: In 1489 DR, the Masked Lords of Waterdeep, wary of his divided attention and ambitions, replaced him as Open Lord with Laeral Silverhand. Neverember was exiled, leaving him bitter and deeply resentful of Waterdeep’s nobility.
  • The Neverwinter Despot: Returning to Neverwinter full-time, his rule became more entrenched and authoritarian. He imposed heavy taxes, forbade the formation of new guilds or wizard circles, and expanded his network of spies. His goal was singular: to make Neverwinter so dependent on his leadership that its people would eventually beg him to take the crown as king.

Personality & Methods

Neverember’s personality is a key to his success and the suspicion that surrounds him.

  • The Public Figure: He is charismatic, affable, and a masterful orator. He treats new acquaintances as friends, shows genuine respect to capable individuals, and has a flair for inspiring loyalty. He presents himself as a decisive, no-nonsense leader who does what is necessary for the common good.
  • The Private Mind: Beneath this congeniality is a calculating, ambitious, and pragmatic opportunist. He is nicknamed “Dagger” Neverember for his cunning and brutal pragmatism. He constantly assesses people for their use, files away rumors for leverage, and is relentlessly results-oriented. He has engaged in embezzlement and assassination to secure his position, though he now prefers to operate within creatively interpreted laws.
  • Drives & Vices: He is motivated by a desire for legacy, power, and personal enrichment. He is rarely without a strong drink, enjoys flirting outrageously, and has a quick temper that can cloud his judgment.

Relationships

  • Renaer Neverember (Son): Their relationship is estranged and complicated by the inheritance from Dagult’s wife, leading to mutual animosity.
  • Laeral Silverhand: He deeply resents his successor as Open Lord of Waterdeep, viewing his ouster as a betrayal.
  • The Harpers & Sons of Alagondar: These groups view his rule as imperialistic and tyrannical. The Sons of Alagondar, in particular, are a faction of rebels actively plotting against him, branding him the “Pretender”.
  • Adventurers & Mercenaries: Bitter towards Waterdeep, he prefers to hire adventurers and mercenaries (like the Mintarn) to solve problems and train troops, rather than accept aid from the Lords’ Alliance armies.

Political Stance & Current Role

In 1491 DR, Dagult Neverember is the absolute, if contested, ruler of Neverwinter.

  • Lord Protector: He holds this title by force of will, economic control, and successful propaganda. The tangible rebuilding of the city has won over many citizens, but native Neverwintans and old noble families still see him as a foreign Waterdhavian governor.
  • The “Pretender” Problem: His fabricated lineage is an open secret among the elite, making him permanently vulnerable to claimants with true Alagondar blood. The rumor of a “Lost Heir” is his greatest political threat.
  • A Strategic Mind: He is a member of the Lords’ Alliance and uses it to legitimize his rule and counter Luskan’s influence, though he participates with simmering resentment toward Waterdeep. His ultimate ambition remains to make Neverwinter the heart of a mercantile empire that surpasses Waterdeep itself.
