The Lord’s Alliance
“Order, Civilization, and Prosperity”

Overview
The Lord’s Alliance is a political and military coalition of the rulers and powerful merchants of the major cities of the North. United by shared interests in trade, security, and stability, the Alliance represents the face of “civilized” power on the Sword Coast.
Unlike a unified empire, the Alliance is a loose confederation—each member city retains its sovereignty, but they commit to mutual defense and cooperation when threats emerge that could destabilize the region.
Member Cities
The Alliance’s strength lies in its network of powerful city-states:
- Waterdeep - The City of Splendors, largest and wealthiest member
- Neverwinter - Recently rejoined under Lord Dagult Neverember
- Baldur’s Gate - Major southern port and trading hub
- Silverymoon - City of scholars and magic in the Silver Marches
- Mirabar - Mining city rich in ore and gems
- Yartar - River town controlling barge traffic
- And several smaller settlements seeking protection
Goals and Methods
Primary Objectives:
- Secure and expand trade routes throughout the North
- Eliminate threats to civilization (bandits, monsters, hostile forces)
- Strengthen lawful governance and urban prosperity
- Maintain balance of power among member cities
- Project strength to deter would-be conquerors
How They Operate: The Alliance works through diplomacy first, but backs its words with professional soldiers, hired mercenaries, and sanctioned adventurers. They are not above espionage or political maneuvering to achieve their goals.
Structure and Leadership
The Alliance has no single ruler. Instead, it operates through:
- The Council of Lords - Representatives from each member city meet periodically to discuss threats and coordinate action
- Ambassadors - Stationed in member cities to facilitate communication and cooperation
- Alliance Agents - Operatives who work on behalf of the Alliance’s interests, often adventurers or mercenaries under contract
Decision-making can be slow due to competing interests, but when the Alliance acts in unity, it wields tremendous power.
Who Serves the Alliance
- City guards and professional soldiers
- Sanctioned mercenary companies
- Nobles and merchants with vested interests
- Diplomats and ambassadors
- Adventurers hired for specific missions
- Spies and informants (though less extensive than the Harpers)
Reputation and Perception
The Establishment View: To city dwellers and merchants, the Alliance represents safety, prosperity, and order. They are the reason trade flows, roads are patrolled, and monsters don’t raid settlements.
The Frontier View: In places like Phandalin, the Alliance is seen as distant but potentially helpful. They might send aid… if it serves their interests.
The Critical View: Some see the Alliance as a tool of the wealthy and powerful, more concerned with profits than people. Their “order” can feel like control, and their “civilization” sometimes comes at the expense of those who don’t fit their vision.
Current State (1491 DR)
The Alliance has been strengthened in recent years as threats to the North have multiplied. The rebuilding of Neverwinter and its rejoining of the Alliance has been a significant victory, though tensions with Luskan remain.
The frontier remains volatile, with orc tribes, bandit gangs, and forgotten ruins full of danger. The Alliance seeks to expand its influence into these wild lands—not through direct conquest, but by supporting settlements, securing roads, and eliminating threats.
What the Alliance Wants from Adventurers
The Lord’s Alliance frequently hires capable individuals for tasks such as:
- Clearing bandits from trade routes
- Investigating threats to member cities
- Recovering dangerous artifacts before they fall into the wrong hands
- Scouting enemy forces or rival factions
- Protecting valuable caravans or dignitaries
- Establishing contact with frontier settlements
Payment is typically fair, and those who serve the Alliance well may earn noble patronage, letters of recommendation, or even titles.
Allies and Rivals
Allies:
- The Order of the Gauntlet - Shared interest in destroying evil threats
- Individual members of The Harpers - When goals align
- Frontier settlements seeking protection
Rivals:
- The Zhentarim - The Black Network’s methods undermine lawful trade
- Luskan and its pirate fleets
- Barbarian tribes and orc kingdoms
- Anyone who threatens stability and prosperity
Symbol and Recognition
The Alliance’s symbol is a golden crown on a purple field, though member cities often fly their own banners alongside it. Alliance agents carry writs of authority bearing the seal of their sponsoring lord.
